The Way We Were:

Local news: Sickness is rife in the district in various forms of lagrippe and pneumonia, and local physicians and clergymen are very busy.

Mr. Edward Dale, of the 4th range, has a cow which surprised him not a little last Tuesday by giving birth to three calves—a male and two females. The young bovines are all vigorous and healthy looking, and of ordinary size.

Miss Potter, our new principal, arrived on Saturday night and assumed charge of the Academy on Monday morning. She has already won a good deal of popularity here, both in and out of school, and the Academy bids fair to regain its prosperity under her hand. We wish her continued success.

Several of McLachlin Bros.’ teams arrived here on Saturday evening loaded with sections of an “alligator” tug-boat, which the firm intend to operate on their Black river limits. The teamsters in charge are reported to have had rather a trying experience owing to the heavy nature of their horses, and the extra width of the sleighs employed in hauling the loads. The big horses could not be kept on the beaten track, and of course the sleighs had to plough a track for themselves, which made the trip a very laborious one on the whole.

Before proceeding on the journey from here, some of the heavy teams were discarded and lighter horses procured in their places, but even then the progress up river was very slow.
