Local News: The big coffer dam at the head of Calumet Chutes, which has been holding back the water of the channel while the work of constructing the dam and power plant at the foot was in progress, was blown up on Tuesday by the explosion of 14 tons of dynamite.

THE EQUITY learned with much regret last Thursday afternoon that Mr. Alex H. Horner, of North Clarendon, had met with the misfortune of losing his residence by fire, together with most of the contents. Mrs. Horner and her two small children, it seems, were the sole occupants of the house when the fire started and of course, could do but little towards saving anything til help arrived. The weather was bitterly cold and stormy at the time and considerable hardship was experienced under the circumstances.

The box social and dance featured by the local hockey club in Wilson’s Hall last Wednesday night came off very successfully. Some real old-time square dancing was participated in to violin music rendered by Mr. and Miss Stickler of Litchfield.

It is said that ten millions of people were enabled to witness the rare phenomenon of the sun’s total eclipse which occurred on Friday morning. The fortunates were all across the U.S. boundary. In Canada, a heavily cloud-laden sky rendered observation impossible and very many were disappointed, including particularly those scientists who had made elaborate preparation for taking observations at a point near Hamilton where the eclipse was expected to be seen to the best advantage. Here in Pontiac, it made little difference whether the atmosphere was clear or not as we were too far north of the curved strip of territory which was affected by the moon’s shadow, to make the event interesting.
