Hockey: Hockey, in a local or county sense, is far from evoking the interest it did in years gone by, when there was considerable rivalry between the several principal villages of the county—Coulonge, Campbells Bay, Portage du Fort, Shawville and Quyon.
Some strenuous games were pulled off in those days before comparatively large crowds, at Shawville especially, where conditions for both playing and witnessing the great Winter sport are much better than other places mentioned can boast of. Shawville had a team, too, in which the villagers took pride. Now it is different, nobody of senior rank is seen with a hockey stick in hand any more.
But there is good crop of hockeyists springing up, and in a year or two, if they hang together, will be ready to dispute honors with the best of our county amateurs.
Another chicken raid: The hen roost robbers—or others of the same unsavoury breed—who plied their nefarious traffic in Shawville and neighborhood in the early part of the Winter, invaded the village some time between midnight and Tuesday morning before anyone was astir, and made off with a considerable bag of poultry procured on the premises of four or five citizens, the swag thus attached consisting of some 30 odd birds.
The same night a hand-sleigh at W. A. Hodgins’ disappeared, but it may not have gone the way of the other “booty,” as next morning there was evidence to show the thieves had a horse-drawn rig of their own, or “borrowed” for the expedition. The belief is general that the thieves, whoever they are, are not residents of the district, yet at the same time have a fairly intimate knowledge of the layout of the village. Whether for good or ill, they have been here before, and the chances are they will call again when this thing blows over. The question is what steps can be taken to frustrate these annoying incursions?
