The Way We Were:

Local news: The intelligence of the death of the Hon. George Bryson Sr., which reached Shawville a few minutes after the event occurred on Saturday morning came as a surprise to citizens, generally, the impression being that the venerable gentlemen was in better health of late than some months ago.

The neighbouring farmers and others in Otter Lake and Leslie seem to have all a press of work this season, what with forwarding produce to the lumber depots and timber contracts, everyone seems to be occupied.
A son of Mr. Thos. Tubman of Thorne West, while working in the woods alone at his father’s shanty, gave his foot a very bad cut with an axe.

Everywhere throughout the country, especially in those centres of population that are contributing of their youth and manhood to make up the second military contingent which will shortly rail from Halifax for South Africa, it is gratifying to notice the patriotic measures that have been taken by the people in the direction of providing comforts of various forms for the young men.

This patriotic wave was shown in Aylmer last week when the citizens of that town turned out en masse to do honour to two of her own sons, Messrs. Howard Symmes and G. Howard, and also to Mr. Lewis J. LeRoy, native of Bryson village.
