The Way We Were:

Tractor trailer flips out: On Jan. 7 at about 6 p.m. on Highway 148 near Ray’s Texaco in Shawville, a blue Mack tractor truck hauling a Heit trailer tank carrying 2,000 gallons of caustic soda from Rodgers Chemical Company in Connecticut slid onto its side due to extremely bad weather.

The trailer truck was apparently trying to slow down to turn into the fuel station when it slid into the ditch. A second tanker which pulled up behind the toppled vehicle transferred the liquid chemical for delivery at Consolidated-Bathurst.

No one was hurt and civil protection officers Bill Black of Shawville and Roger Lafontaine of Hull ascertained that only two gallons were lost in the transfer.

Zimmerlings lose home they took 20 years building: On Jan. 6, a heart rending disaster occurred to Charlie and Minnie Zimmerling who live in the township of Cawood, some 10 miles from Otter Lake, when their home and all personal possessions were destroyed by fire.

Charlie, aged 87 and his wife, Minnie, 79, were enjoying their noon lunch with their daughter Esther when a deep terrifying noise was heard on the second floor of their home. Upon hurried inspection, the noise was discovered to be coming from a fire between the floors and walls of their house, caused by overheated stove pipes. They were driven out of the house by smoke and ten minutes later the home was completely destroyed.

Twenty-four years ago, Charlie and Minnie decided to build a new home. After living and bringing their children into the world in a little log cabin of 12 feet by 18 feet, their life’s ambition was to have a large comfortable home. So in 1950 they started construction of a house 36 feet by 38 feet.
