The Way We Were:

Local News: In the minutes of Clarendon council, council makes a request to residents of the township who have wooden gates on their property along winter roads to kindly remove the same during the winter months and thus prevent snow drifts forming opposite such gates and consequent impediments to traffic.

The Algoma Wolf Hunt Club’s hounds, Soo and Star, brought to earth their first wolf yesterday afternoon near Isbester. The hounds pounced upon their prey at the end of a two or three mile chase from the Bar River schoolhouse and held him until Gibson Murray caught up and killed the wolf. Murray was one of five hunters who went on the expedition. Those who were out on the hunt were Bob and Norman Wilson, Douglas Garret, and Bob and Gibson Murray.

An old man named Joseph Bouchard, who lived something of the hermit’s life in a little house at Wakefield Lake Creek, an isolated spot, where callers were few, was found dead some days ago in a hole under the floor used by him as a cellar.

The discovery was made by some of the neighbours who, in passing the place, remarked that no tracks were visible leading either to or from the door. Closer investigation showed that the door had been nailed up and this led to the belief that something was wrong. The door was forced open. The place was found in a disordered condition and a sheet with blood stains thereon was picked up. It was seen that the trap door leading to the cellar had also been nailed down. When this had been pried open the shocking sight of the old man’s body, lying face downwards, met the gaze of the investigators who at once got in communication with the authorities at Hull. When found, the old man’s body was frozen (he had been dead for several days). Bouchard is known to have had some insurance money and possession of this is believed to have been the motive for the crime.

An autopsy conducted by Dr. R. Lafontaine of Montreal showed that the victim of the murder was shot in the back at close range from a rifle. No arrests have yet been made and the whereabouts of an escaped convict who is said to have visited the old man about Christmas time are being sought by the authorities.
