The Way We Were:

A little of this and that: No place for a man . . . Is a clothes line in an apartment building as we discovered the other day. Bringing in the clothes for the better half we had just finished in time for Bill Fletcher to say “thank you very much for bringing in our washing”

The Beans have it . . . Seven men working in Anthony Armstrong’s bush on the front road of Bristol the other day, all bear the name Bean. They were six sons of Tom Bean and their uncle Wilfred Bean. The boys are: Keith, Oliver, Gerald, Earl, Elburne and Lyle.

Thought of the week . . . If God hadn’t intended us to listen more than we talk, He would have given us two mouths and only one ear.

Shawville Fair re-elects Lee Hodgins, praises retiring Secretary R. W. Hodgins: Retiring after 48 years as secretary of Shawville Fair, R. W. Hodgins was highly praised by President Lee Hodgins at the annual meeting of the Pontiac Agricultural Society, held in the Agricultural Building last week.

The president said that Mr. Hodgins, “through his untiring efforts and devotion to the society,” had been largely responsible for the high standard of the Shawville Fair. Evidence of his excellent services, the president said, is to be seen in the clearing, in the last few years, of all the mortgage indebtedness on the grounds and buildings. Mr. Hodgins was asked and consented to remain as temporary secretary of the association until another had been arranged for.

The audit report, which was presented, showed total receipts of $11,371 on the past year’s activities, and after the expenses were met, there was left a deficit of $3,484, but it was shown that when various grants and other receipts came to hand, there would actually be a balance in the bank of $2,077. As the fair had bonds on hand for $3,300, it was felt that the association is in a strong financial position, in spite of several cold days at fair time. In all, 123 exhibitors entered and there were given prizes for regular society entries of $2,493; extra prizes of $116, and cattle breeding club prizes of $129, making a total of $4,900 given out in prizes, while $822 was hung up as prizes in the various trials of speed.

It was decided that the exhibition dates for this year would be from September 19 to 22 inclusive.
