The Way We Were:

Local News: Effective from this week’s meeting of Shawville council, Reuben Smith has been appointed mayor to complete the unexpired portion of the term of Cliff Schwartz. These changes were made necessary by the announcement of his retiral read to council from Mayor Schwartz. The popular retiring official feels that owing to the injuries he sustained in a road accident last fall, that he cannot give full service to the electors.

A novel and enjoyable sports event took place on Saturday evening in the Shawville arena when a large crowd of fans witnessed a hockey game between a pick up team from Shawville and a similar team from Campbell’s Bay. Although the game ended in a 5-1 decision in Shawville’s favour, it was evident that the erst-while enemies were on the friendliest of terms and entered fully in the spirit of the game.

Following the match, the younger generation swarmed on to the ice and enjoyed an hour or so of old fashioned moccasin dancing to the strains of lively music from a record player operated by John Howard.
