The Way We Were:

A little of this and that: A Long Turning . . . The Pickanock Road from Shawville to Charteris was so chopped up Tuesday that a visitor to Charteris had to come all the way back to Shawville to get turned around.

It’s no mystery . . . Who the bearded visitor to town is. He’s John McCredie who hasn’t shaved since September and says he won’t shave until June.

Ditto . . . Even home isn’t safe. Mrs. Matilda Milke, of Schwartz, is in bed for ten days after losing her footing just outside the house She has two broken and two cracked ribs.

Honored: S. W. MacKechnie, of Wyman, Que., was surprised at his home Wednesday evening when 12 of his friends arrived and presented him with a “gladstone bag”. Mr. MacKechnie left Thursday by plane for Scotland, where he intends to buy cattle to add to his prize Ayrshire herd.

Skate, eat beans at Lions outing: Members of the Lions Club of Shawville journeyed to Stark’s Corners last Thursday night for an evening’s fun as guests of the residents of Stark’s Corners. The night of entertainment was the way the people of the district chose to say “Thank you” for the lights the Lions had installed on the local skating rink.

Many of the Lions, their wives or girl friends, braved the rink for a spot of skating while others had their fun heckling from the boards. After the skating the party moved into the church hall to dig into a huge feast of beans, cooked in assorted ways, cakes and other good things to eat. President Charles Imison conveyed the thanks of the Lions to the women of Stark’s Corners for the fine meal.

Shawville Jrs battle Pembroke: Shawville Jrs gave Arnprior the one-two treatment in the Upper Ottawa Valley Junior Hockey League semi-finals to put them right up with Pembroke Little Lumber Kings to playoff for the hockey championship.

Death: William John Horner, a well-known and lifelong citizen of this district, died Saturday midnight at his home on King Street after an illness of five months. He was in his 79th year.

Born in the Radford section of Clarendon Township, he was the son of the late Ralph Horner and Frances Telford. He lived on the homestead farm of his parents until 1923, at which time he retired from farming to make his home in Shawville. Since that time he has worked a good deal at road building in this section. He was married 54 years ago to the former Mary Richardson, of Radford, who predeceased him in June, 1948.
