The Way We Were:

Local news: The Rev. Father Brunet desires to offer his sincere thanks and heartfelt gratitude to the citizens of Portage du Fort for their gallant and successful efforts, under many difficulties, in saving the church and also the greater part of his household effects from the fire that destroyed the presbytery on Wednesday morning, the 13th inst., and his prayer is that God may bless those noble friends for their timely assistance.

The country roads are in a terrible condition with pitch-holes at present, making travelling very disagreeable and slow.

The funeral of the late James Armstrong of Clarendon Front took place on Thursday from the family residence to the Methodist church, Shawville, where the services were conducted by the Rev. Dr. Tucker. A large assemblage of friends were in attendance, testifying to the esteem in which the deceased was held. For many years he has been a prominent figure in the township. He was a councillor for some nine years and for several years Mayor of Clarendon. He was for ten years a school commissioner and took a warm interest in education. He held also for many years the office of rural inspector.

Greermount: It was noticed that one of Miss Macfarlane’s large scholars drove a certain young lady home from church on Sunday and she was not the teacher.

Owing to the bad condition of the roads and the amount of illness in this vicinity the attendance at school was small, the average for the week being 14.
