Community Curling Bonspiel rocks on after 25 years: Shawville Curling Club Community Bonspiel is celebrating its 25th year and according to Harold Hall, “it’s bigger and probably better,” he says, “but certainly, there is no more enthusiasm now than there was then.”
Hall was a founding member, along with Doug Young and Billy Kuehl. The bonspiel opened Thursday night with Hall throwing the ceremonial first rock.
Curling Club president Andrew Simms echoed Hall’s sentiment in his brief opening speech.
“Through the 25 years, the philosophy has stayed the same,” he said. “And that is, the community gets together and has some fun.
Chainsaw contest, band are highlights of carnival: The return of a chainsaw competition and live entertainment proved to be a good move for organizers of the annual Danford Lake Carnival last weekend.
Crowds were so large, organizers ran out of both food and liquor.
“The chainsaw competition was a real highlight,” says Recreation Association vice-president Donna Peck. “It brought the crowds out.” Among the five chainsaw classes, Mike Day’s cut in 8.78 seconds proved to be the fastest.
Bethany Hall was packed for Saturday night’s dance featuring the band “Extreme Heat”.
Well-organized children’s games also drew a lot of participants.
Peck gave credit to the volunteers, participants and spectators who made this year’s carnival such a success.
