The Way We Were:

Otter Lake Carnival gets bigger and better: Large crowds turned out on the weekend for one of the most successful Otter Lake carnivals ever.

“We were planning our Y2K celebrations to be bigger than anything before and they are,” says recreation association president Joan Dubeau, adding the New Year’s Eve bash kick-started the year of the big crowds.

“We’re looking forward to Canada Day,” she said.

The association’s lakeside hall was packed with people for the teen pageant Friday and the crowds continued to show up until the carnival’s close Sunday, which featured the Pitoune tournament, the lumberjack contest, the parade and the amateur talent contest.

Ottawa Valley Titans Giant Tiger Cup champs: The skating and play-making capabilities of the Ottawa Valley “AA” Titans over an enthusiastic, but tired looking Pembroke Kings was displayed very early in Shawville’s Y2K version of the Pontiac National Midget Hockey Tournament grand championship game Sunday evening.

So quickly did Ottawa run up the score, that it seemed every possession of the puck would end up behind the helpless Kings’ goalie.
