The Way We Were:

A little of this and that: The weather . . . Saturday morning John Hitz’s thermometer at Ladysmith registered 52 below, according to Walter Smith. At J. M. Argue’s lumber camp in the Lake Dumont area the low is unknown. The mercury got as far as it could, all gathered in a little ball at the bottom of the tube.

Top honors . . . Brought to Shawville by Geo. T. Dagg and Son, whose 15-cow herd topped the list in the breed improvement and classification with the Canadian Ayrshire Breeders’ Association. Their score was 87.83 per cent in competition with 56 other herds.

The winners . . . Last week we reported seven Beans working at one time in a bush. Away back in 1937, the Deans beat them all hollow with 11 working in Jimmie Stewart’s bush. They were John A., Lennis, Leslie, Ernest, Clarence, the late Amy (cook), Arthur, Lyle, Sidney, Menzie and Lornie.

Thought of the week . . . Communism, like cancer, hits at people in all walks of life. While we have no cure for cancer, we do have a cure for Communism.

Quebec Directors: Wyman McKechnie and Roland Pigeon were chosen as Quebec directors of the Canadian Ayrshire Breeders’ Association at the annual meeting held in Montreal.

Bernice is Queen: Bernice Gardiner, of Bryson, will be crowned the Pontiac Lions Club Carnival Queen Saturday night in Campbell’s Bay. When votes were finally tabulated Tuesday night, Eldon Keon, general manager, announced the Bryson girl winner with 88,125 votes.

Doris Burrows, of Campbell’s Bay, placed second with 75,450 votes and Marie Cahill, of Calumet Island, third, with 53,325. Mona Burns, Portage du Fort, had 30,025; Shirley Judd, Shawville, 14,875, and Cecile Romain, Fort Coulonge, 5,725. A total of 267,525 votes were cast.
