The Way We Were:

Local news: Misses Florence and Evelyn Howard entertained the members of St. Paul’s Young Girls’ Guild on Wednesday afternoon of last week, when they took occasion to present two of their members who are going away, namely, Misses Mary Foran and Myrtle Dale, with tokens of esteem and in recognition of their valued services to the organization. Miss Foran was the recipient of a sum of money, while Miss Dale received a beautiful ivory clock. Mrs. Walter Findlay assisted the Misses Howard in the serving of refreshments.

Owing to the rabies scare, which originated near Chelsea, Dr. Grisdale, deputy minister of Agriculture, at Ottawa, has issued an edict that all dogs in the Ottawa district shall be muzzled or tied up. Any dogs running at large without a muzzle, may be shot on sight. In commenting on the order, Dr. James, Veterinary Surgeon, is of opinion that only officers of the Humane Society or members of the police force, should be allowed to shoot dogs running at large, as otherwise, the accidental shooting of people was liable to occur. Dr. James has said something worth considering.

The first hockey match of a senior nature this season was played on Friday evening last, when a team from Aylmer came up to try conclusions with the local squad, which is now almost entirely made up of junior players. The showing made by the locals was very satisfying to the spectators, who were somewhat under the impression that Shawville was up against it this year for hockey players of a senior rank. The locals out-skated and out-played their opponents at every turn and their team-play was something worth watching. Of the eight goals scored by the locals, only two were made on individual efforts. The second period was the most exciting as each team scored one. The first and last periods were too much one-sided, as the total score — 8 to 1 — indicates. S. E. Dale handled the game and only had to send a couple of players to the bench for very minor offences.

County Orange meeting: The annual meeting of the County Orange Lodge, for the election of officers and other business, was held in Shawville Orange Hall on Thursday last, Rev. T. W. Ball, retiring Co. Master, presiding. There was a fairly good representative attendance.

The election of officers resulted as follows: W. H. Corrigan, Co. Master; Andrew Sly, Dep. Co. Master; Rev. J. A. Macfarlane, Chap; R. Hodgins, Rec.-Sec., re-elected; Rex. Wilson, Fin.-Sec.; John A. Smiley, Treasurer; L. Harkness, Dir. of Cer.; John Dean, Co. Lecturer; Chas. Workman, Dep. Lecturer.
