The Way We Were:

Local news: A solid spell of rain on Monday and Tuesday put us easily back into the middle of October so far as the weather is concerned.

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Howes mourn the loss of their infant son who was taken away on Monday.

Mr. Adam Hodgins (bricklayer), has taken charge of the skating rink for the approaching winter and has commenced the task of “flooding” the same, which owing to the sandy character of the soil, will take some little time, even with favourable weather.

In today’s issue will be found a notice stating that at the next session of the parliament of Canada, the Pontiac Pacific Junction Railway Company will make application for an act authorizing it to construct and operate a railway from, or near Quyon or Shawville to Pembroke, and to construct branches not exceeding 30 miles.

A good many people were disappointed on reaching town last Tuesday to learn that there was no session of the Magistrates’ Court, it having for some cause or other been adjourned til some time after the holidays. As many of these people had to come a long distance, and were at considerable expense as well as loss of time, it seems rather too bad when it was found necessary to adjourn the court that some notice thereof could not have been circulated beforehand.

A number of our citizens have been argumentatively waxing hot of late over the twentieth century problem and a few bets have been made on the side just to determine where we are at. Meanwhile, the astronomer Royal has given out what the nineteenth century closes with the end of the year one thousand, nine hundred – 12 months from the thirty-first day of December, inst.
