Historical Society hears Jim McCuaig: In spite of bad weather, a good turnout of members and visitors attended the Pontiac Historical Society dinner meeting on Monday at the United Church Hall. After a delicious pot-luck meal arranged by the ladies, Mr. Wyman MacKechnie introduced his old friend Jim McQuaig, speaker of the evening.
Mr. McQuaig’s address was interesting, informative and often amusing as he told about the early days of the lumber trade and forest conservation in the Pontiac and the Ottawa Valley. He related his personal discovery that the hemlock bark from the timber of the Ottawa Valley was taken to Boston by French Canadians of Quebec City and vicinity and there used in the great leather tanning industry.
The speaker was thanked by Mrs. McCleary, Treasurer of the Society, and presented with a framed life membership certificate.
Mr. McQuaig’s talk was tape recorded for addition to the archives of the society.
Junior “C” Hockey: The Pontiacs have chalked up a impressive record of four wins and a tie in their last five outings. Tied with Fort Coulonge as the league leaders, the team is now beginning to display winning favour. In last weekend encounters against Fort Coulonge and Bourget, the locals netted impressive 8-2 and 9-2 respective victories.
This past Friday night in a home game with Fort Coulonge, the Pontiacs staved off a late surge by the visitors to rally a 3-3 tie. The marksmen for the Shawville Juniors were Steve Newberry, Rick Young and Paul Finnigan; while Godin, Soucie and Dupous tallied for the visitors. The final period of the game, however, was marred by a high assessment of penalties to both sides.
