The Way We Were:

Local News: Following a spell of sweltering weather last week, there was a decided dip in the temperature Thursday night and frost was reported from some localities Friday morning.

Coulonge had a sensation on Sunday evening when a young man named Rodolphe Lebine received a gun shot wound in the side, which necessitated his removal to a Pembroke Hospital. One story has it that the shooting was the result of liquor and jealousy over a woman. Another version is that a crowd of young men decided to wreck the shack of a man living near Lapasse, Ont. and were fired at by the owner.

A close call – on Saturday last, two American people who are visiting friends at Campbell’s Bay, had an experience at Green lake which they are not likely to forget for some time.

The parties had motored to Shawville to get some car repairs and returned by way of Green lake. Arriving there, a canoe that happened to be on the shore was requisitioned for a spin on the lake. All went well til in attempting to turn the canoe, opposite W.A. Hodgins’ cottage, the craft turned over, precipitating the occupants into the water. Both could swim but encumbered with rather heavy clothing, they found it difficult to keep afloat after several unsuccessful attempts had been made to right the canoe. Little Leslie Hodgins noticed the plight of the pair in the water and ran to the cottage and told his mother who, taking in the situation at a glance, hurried for Mrs. P.E. Smiley and the two ladies, jumping into a boat, made all haste up the lake and succeeded in rescuing the luckless pair, who by this time were utterly exhausted.
