The Way We Were:

Local News: With haying still unfinished, the greater part of the harvest in this district is ripe and quite a lot of grain is now in stook.

W.J. Hayes’ new block in Shawville on the busy corner which is just finished, is already occupied by the following tenants: Cliff Cone’s barber shop; the local office of the Ottawa River Power Co.; Mrs. M. Chamberlin’s millinery shop; Dr. Docks, dentist; Mrs. W.m. Turriff and son, Arthur and family are also tenants of the new block.

Among those who left here on Tuesday morning’s train for the west were J.H. Brownlee, Claude Elliott and wife; Paul Compeau and wife; Sam Horner and wife; Milburn Horner; Chas. Imison, John McKinley, Russell Findlay, George Tucker, Sam MacCallum, Moreland Hodgins and Mervin Sly; in all, 53 parties.

A lawn social was given by the Ladies Aid of the newly formed United Church at Starks Corners on Thursday evening.

The tables were spread on the lawn at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Dean and were artistically decorated as well as laden with an abundance of food in its most tempting forms.

Despite the inclement weather in the early evening, there was an unusually large gathering and thus the efforts of the aldes were amply rewarded.

A meeting of leading Conservatives of the county was held at Campbell’s Bay on Tuesday last, for the purpose of reorganization and other business. Dr. R.S. Dowd, acting president of the county Conservative Association, occupied the chair.

Mr. Thomas Proulx, an employee at the Kingdon Mines near Galetta, met his death on Monday morning when he was buried in a cave-in down in the shaft.

Mr. W.J. Dagg, 7th line, is now enjoying the benefit of electric lights from the Bryson plant.

It is safe to predict it won’t be very long before every householder who has not hitherto been a user of electricity for lighting purposes, will get linked up with the system, which should be as perfect as any that can be provided.

Already a good many citizens are talking of installing those modern electrical accessories which do much to eliminate the drudgery from housework and in this country where wood is plentiful and the measure always good and flowing over, some citizens are even talking electrical cooking stoves, if they can induce the company to come down to a reasonable element service, which as presently proposed is practically prohibitive.
