The Way We Were:

Sauvé store destroyed by fire: A three alarm fire on Calumet Island right next to the new post office, destroyed Roger Sauvé & Fils M & M Store early last Wednesday morning, around 1 a.m.

Fire brigades from Calumet Island, Bryson and Campbell’s Bay fought the blaze and were successful in preventing it from spreading to the buildings on either side, but over a hundred thousand dollars of damage was approximated.

Mr. Sauvé had just purchased the general store in December of last year and is now at work demolishing the ruins.

Otter Lake Regatta: An ideal place for a regatta, Otter Lake was host to hundreds on Sunday when Robert Quaile coordinated the 1975 event, sponsored by the Recreation Association of Otter Lake.

Drivers came from Ottawa, Arnprior, Almonte, Carleton Place, Montreal and even from North Carolina.

One of the main attractions at the Otter Lake Regatta was a tunnel boat.

Another crowd pleaser was Mike Struble, originally from Florida but now living in Ottawa, who performed on waterskis, barefoot, on a  paddle, and even with shoe skis standing on his hands.

Many spectators along the river’s edge watched in folding chairs.
