The Way We Were:

A little of this and that: Timber . . . J. M. Argue’s mill went into operation over a week ago, a month ahead of schedule. About 25 are employed at present. The wheels started Wednesday at Norval McNeill’s mill at Charteris, giving work to eight or ten men.

New job . . . Appointment of Harry Thompson, secretary of the Pontiac Community Hospital as a Justice of the Peace was announced this week by Ray Johnston, MLA.

Our guess . . . The next president of the United States will be General Douglas MacArthur.

Dr. Frank Cowley new coroner: Appointment of Dr. Frank C. Cowley, of Shawville, as Coroner for the Pontiac, was announced this week by Ray Johnston, MLA. Dr. Cowley will be joint coroner with Dr. L. Renaud of Campbell’s Bay. Born and raised in Bristol, Dr. Cowley practised in Shawville before going to the Ottawa Civic Hospital to take a two-year post graduate course in surgery. He returned to Shawville last Fall, accompanied by his wife and their son Bobbie.

“Memories Of The Past” by Mrs. Mervyn Dale, Shawville: Oft my memories take me back to the old farming days. Where father toiled so faithfully and mother taught us prayers. I see the old red granary, I see the old grey horses Dad used upon the farm. They served him so faithfully, as they plowed upon the land they raked the hay so carefully, and hauled it to the barn. They harrowed up the furrows, and seeded in the grain. They hauled the wood for winter, in snow and sleet and rain. He dressed them up so dainty, in harness clean and neat. And always filled the manger, with hay for them to eat. He hitched them to the buggy, and drove down to the fair. And carried most prizes home, folks said it wasn’t fair. Old Paul and Maude were gentle, taught always to obey. They were sure to win prizes, when dad would say hay hay! I love to drive to town with him, and hear him say hay hay! Then Maude and Paul would trot like mad, for miles along the way. I love to see the people look, as we drove into town And hear them say as we pass “My, how odd Paul shines”. But this is just a memory, of things I loved the best. For the old grey team has passed away, and dad has gone to rest. But the memory of those dear old days, shall never be forgot. Though many years have passed, I love that humble spot. And though other feet may tread, the lanes and paths he trod of old, we’ll meet again some happy day, upon the streets of gold.
