A new addition to this year’s fair will be a tent dedicated to informing the public about beef cattle.

Pontiac Agricultural Society director Mavis Hanna explained that this is the first year that she could recall they put something like this together.

“We’re going to have a breed show, there’s going to be a display of six different breeds that are local to our area,” she said. “We have local farmers that are bringing out a cow-calf pair that will be featured, as well as information. Some people will be there to talk about cattle and livestock, and answer questions”

The new tent will be replacing the Heavy Horse Educational Tent, which for several years gave fair visitors an opportunity to get up close with eight Clydesdale hitch horses owned by Ray and Amber McLaughlin of Haley Station, Ont.

The new cattle tent will be located beside the beef barn behind the arena. It will be open during regular fair hours from Friday to Sunday. The six breeds on display will be on display are Charolais, Angus, Hereford, Simmental, Limousin and Shorthorn.

Hanna said that there will be plenty of opportunities for the public to get up close with the animals and speak with knowledgeable folks about the cattle industry. Attendees will be able to learn how the animals are cared for, how much they eat on a daily basis and what differentiates them. Hanna explained that having a cow-calf pair on display allows the breeders to show off their cattle’s genetics and specific traits.

She said that very few people are directly involved in agriculture these days, which means that the public is largely in the dark about what goes into raising animals and operating a farm.

“The fair board is an agricultural fair board, it’s part of our desire to inform people about agriculture and where farm produce comes from,” she said, noting that they have had an educational agriculture awareness area for several years, but no displays solely devoted to beef cattle.
