La Maison de la Famille du Pontiac launched their annual snowsuit fund last month, which aims to help provide Pontiac youth with snowsuits and other winter apparel.

According to Director General Lisa Danis, the snowsuit fund aims to help children up to 13-years-old and expects to distribute suits until Dec. 17. The suits require registration and a $20 contribution fee, which Danis says enables La Maison de la Famille to hold the snowsuit fund the following year.

“It’s really important that we help our kids get dressed for the winter,” said Danis. “We have very cold winters in the Pontiac and it’s important to get them prepared. There are some kids who are sometimes still in sandals.”

She explained that when children come and pick up their suits, they’re welcome to pick up gloves, mittens, toques and other winter apparel for no additional cost.

The group has asked for donations from businesses around the Pontiac in the form of snowsuits, winter clothes or money to buy winter apparel.

“With COVID-19 and everything in the situation, I was not expecting the businesses to contribute as much as they did in the past, but they’re always there to support us,” said Danis.

According to Danis, last year, the snowsuit fund helped provide 112 suits to youth all from Bristol to Rapides des Joachims. This year, they’re expecting to provide more snowsuits because they started earlier than usual.

“We really want to help the people, the families and the kids in need for this cool winter,” said Danis. “If it’s possible for them to come and help us and it’s possible for them to come in and support us, that is appreciated. All those kids are grateful when they receive their suits.”
