The Shawville Pontiacs went up against the Madawaska Valley Wolves on Friday night, and came out victorious with a hard-fought 5-4 win.
The first period saw Madawaska put up three goals to the home team’s one, with Jean-Robin Mantha firing one in from the top of the circle on a power play.
Pontiacs head coach Darcy Findlay said that the slow start has become a pattern for the team.
“I don’t know what it is, Friday nights after work or whatever it may be but we started slow, we got behind the eight-ball,” he said. “I gave a little talking-to to the group after the first period about, you know, what it is that goes on here pre-game, to be ready to play right off the hop.”
He added that the Madawaska Valley team was really throwing their weight around, making for the most rough-and-tumble matchup they’d had this season.
“It was a physical game, probably our most physical game this year,” he said. “They were running around trying to throw some big hits. They’ve got some heavy bodies, it’s a completely different style than what we try to play. I thought we adjusted well halfway through the game.”
Shawville came out swinging in the second, finding the back of the net three times, with Mantha getting his second of the night as well as assisting Alexandre Landreville. Joey Brennan got the final goal of the frame on a power play.
Xavier Raby opened up the scoring early in the third to put the home team up by two. Nothing got by Pontiacs’ goaltender Danick Boisvert until the final 10 seconds, when Madawaska’s captain Kelly Summers managed to cut the lead to one goal, where it remained: final score 5-4 for Shawville.
Findlay spoke highly of the Pontiacs’ two stars of the game, Mantha and Brennan.
“Joey’s been good every game this year [ . . . ] he really drives our boat offensively,” he said. “JR, he’s got a hell of a shot in the back end there [ . . . ] it’s phenomenal how he can shoot a puck.”
The evening was also a toy drive for the Angel Tree project, in partnership with Shawville Giant Tiger, which brought in a pile of toys and just over $200 in cash donations.
The Pontiacs’ next game is against the Akwesasne Wild on Dec. 6, as this weekend Findlay is organizing the annual Fish Findlay memorial tournament in support of the Shawville District Minor Hockey Association. The next home game will be on Dec. 12 against the Paugan Falls Rapids.

La première période a vu Madawaska marquer trois buts contre un pour l’équipe locale, Jean-Robin Mantha ayant décoché un tir depuis le haut du cercle en avantage numérique.
L’entraîneur-chef des Pontiacs, Darcy Findlay, a déclaré que le lent début de match était devenu une habitude pour l’équipe.
« Je ne sais pas ce que c’est, les vendredis soirs après le travail ou peu importe, mais nous avons commencé lentement, nous nous sommes retrouvés en difficulté », a-t-il dit. « J’ai eu une petite discussion avec le groupe après la première période à propos de, vous savez, ce qui se passe ici avant le match, pour être prêts à jouer dès le départ. »
Il a ajouté que l’équipe de Madawaska Valley jouait de façon très physique, ce qui en faisait le match le plus coriace qu’ils aient eu cette saison.
« C’était un match physique, probablement notre match le plus physique de l’année », a-t-il affirmé. « Ils couraient partout en essayant de donner de grosses mises en échec. Ils ont de gros gabarits, c’est un style complètement différent de ce que nous essayons de jouer. Je pense que nous nous sommes bien adaptés à la moitié du match. »
Shawville est revenue en force en deuxième période, marquant trois fois, Mantha inscrivant son deuxième but de la soirée et assistant Alexandre Landreville. Joey Brennan a marqué le dernier but de la période en avantage numérique.
Xavier Raby a ouvert le score tôt en troisième période pour donner une avance de deux buts à l’équipe locale. Rien n’a déjoué le gardien des Pontiacs, Danick Boisvert, jusqu’aux 10 dernières secondes, lorsque le capitaine de Madawaska, Kelly Summers, a réussi à réduire l’écart à un but, où il est resté : score final de 5 à 4 pour Shawville.
Findlay a fait l’éloge des deux étoiles du match des Pontiacs, Mantha et Brennan.
« Joey a été bon à chaque match cette année [ . . . ] il est vraiment notre moteur offensif », a-t-il dit. « JR, il a un sacré tir de l’arrière là [ . . . ] c’est phénoménal la façon dont il peut lancer un disque. »
La soirée était également une collecte de jouets pour le projet Angel Tree, en partenariat avec Giant Tiger de Shawville, qui a permis de recueillir une montagne de jouets et un peu plus de 200 $ en dons en argent.
Le prochain match des Pontiacs est contre les Wild d’Akwesasne le 6 déc., puisque ce week-end, Findlay organise le tournoi commémoratif annuel Fish Findlay en soutien à l’Association de hockey mineur du district de Shawville. Le prochain match à domicile aura lieu le 12 déc. contre les Rapids de Paugan Falls.
