Last Wednesday evening, Pontiac High School’s auditorium was filled for the school’s annual athletic banquet.
The evening was hosted by physical education teacher Chad Davis, who began with a short story about the Grade 11 male beep test record, which was set several times over the year, most recently by Gibbson Lang at 14.6.
“Gibbson broke it first term, Taytum [Thompson] broke it second term, then Gibbson re-broke it last term on his last chance to run it,” Davis said. “It was something very fun to watch transpire throughout the whole year. It is truly a great accomplishment, those levels up there are very hard. That is a great example of the athletic ability of some of our athletes.”
Nora MacKechnie also set a Grade 7 female beep test record at 11.1.
For every sport and activity, the coaches gave out a variety of awards for standout players, and there were also a slew of individual awards for overall athletic excellence by grade level.
Principal Luke McLaren closed out the evening with a big thanks to the coaches and volunteers for their efforts over the past season.
“In February of this year we did a student voice survey and approximately 70 per cent of our students are involved in some sort of extracurricular in our school,” he said. “That is an exceptional number and I would like to thank our staff members who are participating and organizing these. There’s a lot of effort and time that goes into providing these, whether it’s sports or other extracurriculars.”

Mercredi soir dernier, l’auditorium de l’école secondaire Pontiac était rempli pour le gala sportif annuel de l’école.
La soirée était animée par Chad Davis, professeur d’éducation physique, qui a commencé par une brève histoire sur le record masculin de la « beep test » de 11e année, qui a été battu plusieurs fois au cours de l’année, le plus récemment par Gibbson Lang avec un score de 14,6.
« Gibbson l’a battu au premier trimestre, Taytum [Thompson] l’a battu au deuxième trimestre, puis Gibbson l’a de nouveau battu au dernier trimestre lors de sa dernière chance de le faire », a déclaré Davis. « Ce fut quelque chose de très amusant à regarder se dérouler tout au long de l’année. C’est vraiment un grand accomplissement, ces niveaux sont très difficiles à atteindre. C’est un excellent exemple des capacités athlétiques de certains de nos athlètes. »
Nora MacKechnie a également établi un record féminin de la « beep test » de 7e année avec un score de 11,1.
Pour chaque sport et activité, les entraîneurs ont remis une variété de prix aux joueurs exceptionnels, et il y a également eu une multitude de prix individuels pour l’excellence athlétique générale par niveau scolaire.
Le directeur Luke McLaren a clôturé la soirée en remerciant chaleureusement les entraîneurs et les bénévoles pour leurs efforts au cours de la saison.
« En février de cette année, nous avons mené un sondage auprès des élèves et environ 70 % de nos élèves sont impliqués dans une forme d’activité parascolaire dans notre école », a-t-il déclaré. « C’est un nombre exceptionnel et j’aimerais remercier les membres de notre personnel qui participent à l’organisation de ces activités. Il y a beaucoup d’efforts et de temps qui sont consacrés à l’offre de ces activités, qu’il s’agisse de sports ou d’autres activités parascolaires. »
