The Fort Coulonge Comets ruled their hometown arena all Saturday, as they played host to teams from across the Ottawa Valley in their Minor Hockey Day.
With games played across all divisions, the local boys and girls put all they had out on the ice, delivering many exciting games as fans cheered from the bleachers.
Now into it’s third year, the event acts as a fundraiser for local minor hockey, explained Lisa Rivet, the director of team managers. The day sees a number of different activities take place, such as a bake sale and 50/50, with all proceeds helping to keep registration costs manageable for local families, offsetting the cost of jerseys and ice times.

As well, she highlighted, Saturday was the day for pulling the winning ticket in a big raffle that has been ongoing since player registration began. One lucky winner went on to win the prized half pork, which proved another successful fundraiser for the local teams.
Terri Adams, director for the local teams, said the Comets teams rely on the success of fundraisers like their Minor Hockey Day and baseball tournament in August.
Though they could often use the help of many more volunteers, their current group works overtime to make sure each event is a success. While some took shifts at the 50/50 table, the bake sale saw a large group of volunteers consistently running the show, as more treats continued to show up from hockey parents, further filling the table.
“For those of us who do volunteer, it’s worth it in the end,” said Adams.
In total, six official games were played at the arena on Saturday, but an extra game was held as well for the youngest players, those in the MAHG, to get some ice time, too. Teams travelled in from Arnprior, Eganville, Deep River, Pembroke and the Cobden area to face off against the Comets, all in games sanctioned by the Upper Ottawa Valley Minor Hockey League.
The day culminated in a big win for all the minor Comets players, when they had the opportunity to get into the Pontiac Senior Comets game for free that night. So long as they wore their jersey, minor players could take in some fast-paced action at the ice they warmed up for the seniors, as the Mont Laurier Montagnards came to town.
