Smurfit-Stone produces $100,000 for CT scan Galileo station, module: One of the county’s largest employers displayed a grand gesture of corporate citizenship last Wednesday by making a significant contribution to the Pontiac Community Hospital’s CT scan project.

The Smurfit-Stone Corporation donated $100,000 to help finance the recently-installed CT scan’s Galileo station and an upgraded module.

The Galileo station allows for daily interpretations of images, while the upgraded module reduces radiation exposure to patients. The Galileo station cost an additional $63,818 and the module an extra $30,237 to the CT scan’s cost of $805,250.

The CT scan fundraiser began three years ago with an initial target of $700,000. Due to inflation, the cost of the CT scan unit rose to $805,250 this year. Though the community was able to contribute that amount, the Galileo station and upgraded module made it necessary to raise the additional $100,000.

Outsiders boost Antique show: It was a hot weekend, but many people came from miles around to the 5th Annual Ottawa Valley Antique Association show from June 22 to 24 at the Shawville fairgrounds.

“We drew in a lot of outsiders this year,” said antique show president Lois Dumouchel, “but not as many from Pontiac.”

The association made about $4,300 at the gate this year as opposed to the $2,100 they made last year. There were about 100 exhibits, which included crafts, antiques, tractor pulls and a horse pull.

Winners of the contest were Martin Schultz and Elizabeth Draper, who both won a Kodak Advantix C300 camera; Jean Murray and Karen Robertson, who both won a French dictionary; Charlene Labombard and Katina Petkoglou, who both won a cotton book bag; and Ursula Schultz, who won a 13 video gift pack.
