Dominion Day: Although observed as a holiday by most of our citizens, no local effort was made to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the birth of the Dominion, and those who felt disposed to take the day off, gratified their wishes by journeying to other points, the greater proportion directing their course towards Beachburg, where the National event was celebrated in a befitting manner. Shawville’s sporting element had a special interest in the proceedings at the neighbouring town because of a baseball feature on the program in which the local team was to participate, with a team from Renfrew as their opponents. The resulting match was one of the best that has been witnessed anywhere in the district this season, and so closely contested that it took ten innings to decide the issue. In the overtime the Renfrew boys succeeded in besting their opponents by scoring two runs, making the total count 4 to 2.
