Local news: Mr. Boyle will preach for the last time here next Sunday afternoon and evening, at North Clarendon and Shawville.
The family of Mr. John Cruckshanks, Bristol Mines, are stricken with diphtheria and the house has been quarantined.
On Monday of last week Allumette Island lost one of its oldest inhabitants, by the death of Mr. Terence Duff. The old gentleman was close on 90 years of age, and was for about 60 years a resident of the Island. He is survived by his wife and 12 children.
If you don’t like your location, move. If you can’t say something good of the town in which you live and make that living, then don’t say anything. You not only incur the ill-will of enterprising citizens, but you display your ignorance. It is easy to speak well of your town, and wherever you live you have a good town to talk about—no better in the district.
We had a call on Monday from Mr. Fred. Tippins, of North Clarendon, and his nephew, Mr. Wm. Chapple, who has recently arrived from London, having come to Canada on a visit for the benefit of his health, which has already begun to improve under the exhilarating Canadian atmosphere, supplemented by the skillful attendance of our veteran physician Dr. Lyon. In common with all newcomers from the old land, the festive mosquito has lost no time in cultivating Mr. Chapple’s acquaintance.
The employees of the P. P. J. Railway and the O. N. and W Railway propose holding their annual picnic this year on Dominion Day at Fort Coulonge. On Tuesday of last week, a deputation went to Coulonge to arrange about securing the grounds for the event, and were received by the Hon. George and Mr. James W. Bryson in a most cordial manner, securing not only the use of the beautiful grove, but substantial subscriptions towards the list of popular sports that are in prospect for the day’s enjoyment. An extra cheap rate has been procured over both roads. It is expected that a very large crowd of people will avail themselves of visiting Coulonge on the date mentioned, and we are told the committee will spare no pains to make the occasion most satisfactory in every detail.
