The Way We Were:

Theft with violence on Main Street, Shawville: Three young hoodlums reached an all-time low last Thursday night when they knocked down, struck, kicked and robbed Fern Alarie of over five hundred dollars on Shawville’s Main Street.

Two were Shawville teenagers, under 18 and thus protected from publicity by the Juvenile Offenders Act. The third is Brian Russett whose address is listed as Aylmer.

Fern had attended the weekly meeting of Shawville Lions, a Service Club in which his interest in and work for young people has been considerable. Arriving home, he realized he had left his briefcase at the Smith’s Restaurant where the Lions meet and went back to get it. It was a quarter to twelve when Mr. Alarie left the restaurant for the second time, briefcase in hand. On entering his car he was accosted, first by the girl of the trio, and then by the two boys, who took his money $536.69, beat him up, and fled.

The police were alerted and set up “Operation 100” which is a network of roadblocks all around the area. The thieves were caught driving through Danford Lake and brought to the police station for questioning. The money was found in their possession.

Russett and the male juvenile were released and the female juvenile was placed in a juvenile detention center in Hull. Charges will be laid by the police and the three will have a trial at a later date not yet announced.

CLSC board of directors: The Board of Directors of the CLSC consists of ten people. Two employees are on the board, Michel Legaré and Suzette Adam of Fort Coulonge. Three members are appointed by the Quebec Government, André Pilon of Waltham, Paul Chatillon of Otter Lake, and Raymond Carrier of Fort Coulonge. Five members were elected at an open public meeting on Sunday which was attended by about two hundred citizens of the area. The five elected are Mrs. Rita Romain and Roland Vallière of Fort Coulonge, Mrs. Brigitte St. Aubin of Otter Lake, Michael Thompson of Chapeau and Alexandre Tremblay of Calumet Island. These five will have the responsibility of representing the views of users of the services of the CLSC.
