The Way We Were:

Lions president elected: Iverson Harris was elected as president of the Lions Club of Shawville last Thursday night when members met in the Pontiac House. Vice presidents for 1951 are: John Hitz, Gus Draper and Lloyd Mitchem. Directors are: Lennis Dean, Basil Elliott, John Belsher and Bill Anderson. Dale Thompson was elected secretary and Clif Dale treasurer. Charles Imison is tail twister and Charles Hines lion tamer.

Fifteen babies baptized Sunday at Shawville United Church: Mothers’ day was fittingly recognized on Sunday afternoon when 15 babies received the ordinance of baptism in the United Church at the hands of Dr. A. F. Fokes. From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. parents, with their babies, and accompanied by their friends, came to the Church, sometimes in groups of two or four, sometimes singly and, after baptism, were duly registered and the parents presented with certificates of baptism.

The babies came from as far away as Ottawa, Weirstead, Yarm, Portage du Fort and Murrells. Babies baptized were: Margaret Jill Biesenthal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Biesenthal, of Ottawa; Patsy Jane Stewart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Stewart, of Murrells; Dulcie Irene Elliott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emery Elliott, of Zion; Ronald George Samuel Knox, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Knox, of Shawville and Marva Mae Currie-Mills, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Currie-Mills, of Portage du Fort; Barbara Susanna, Emily Mayhew and Ronald Denzil Mayhew, daughter and son of Mr. and Mrs. Denzil Mayhew, of Shawville; Katharine Anna Stevens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Stevens, Shawville; Carol Anne Hodgins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Garnet Hodgins, of Yarm; Raymond Otto Bretzlaff and Harris Edward Bretzlaff, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bretzlaff, of Shawville; Linda Jean McGuire, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald McGuire, of Murrells; Cheslyn Elaine Dale, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Dale, of Radford; Myrna Arletta Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Smith, of Weirstead.

A little of this and that: There’s a reason . . . For those movie star glasses Lem Hodgins has been wearing lately. He’s had an ulcer on his eye and the burning-off treatment necessitated protecting the eye from light and dust.

Something new . . . Are the king-size cigarettes Ozzie Turner’s been smoking lately. He has one of those new-fangled five cigarettes-at-a-time rollers, and using a special blend of three tobaccos, turns out cigarettes twice the length of the tailor-made variety.

Orphaned . . . By a car which ran over his mother the other night, a kitten has transferred headquarters from the Egg Hatchery to THE EQUITY Office. The better half has named “him” Petunia.

Thought of the week . . . After all, there are few gifts that one human being can give to another in this world as rich as understanding.
