The Way We Were:

Sudden interest develops at McDowell School Committee: Twenty five extra parents turned out at the regular School Committee meeting last Thursday looking for a way to express their feelings about Bill 23. In response to their concern, the School Committee will hold a public meeting this Thursday at the school where the Bill will be explained and possible further action will be discussed.

In other fields, the School Committee’s recent survey about the school cafeteria meals revealed that 85 per cent were in favor of varied menus and 86 per cent were against the static menu of hot dogs, hamburgers and chips.

Another question in the survey, which was responded to by 50 per cent of the parents, showed that 75 per cent were interested in a French Immersion program in the early primary years. This indicated to the School Committee that there might be a changing attitude among area families. They have had as yet no word from the School Board about their attitudes, changing or otherwise.

Calumet Island walkathon for firefighting equipment: Last Saturday 31 people were walking around the beautiful roads of Calumet Island but they weren’t just enjoying the scenery and the brisk bright weather. They were taking part in the Walk-a-thon organized by the Island’s Fire Brigade to raise funds towards the purchase of equipment for fire protection.

A large number of the participants were from the Island itself but there was also a good number of walkers from other Pontiac municipalities.

Speedway opens for 1976: Saturday, May 15th, (or Sunday in case of rain), will be the opening date of the Allumette Speedway for the 1976 season, and four days later, on Wednesday the 19th there will be an Auto Thrill Show with the Imperial Helldrivers and international stars.

The Wednesday special will include two-wheel driving, not recommended for Highway 148 but very exciting at the Speedway.

The Speedway is between Demers Centre and Chapeau on Allumette Island.
