The Way We Were:

Quebec’s Most Modern School To Be Built Here Soon: Shawville is to have “the most modern school in any rural district in Quebec.” The school, which will be known as the Clarendon and Shawville Consolidated School will be built as soon as possible, Ray Johnston, MLA for Pontiac, said Wednesday when he told THE EQUITY that construction of the new school had been authorized by the Department of Education.

The new school is the culmination of a dream of ten years when it was first suggested by school board members. It was brought to its present stage by members of the present Clarendon School Board who are: Edwin Alexander, chairman, Earl Fulford and Garrett Walsh, representing Clarendon and Morley Hodgins and Lee A. Hodgins, representing Shawville. Members of the board said full credit for the fact that the school can now be built should be given Mr. Johnston.

Location of the school is south of King Street on an eight-acre lot acquired two years ago, which runs west from Centre Street to a point behind THE EQUITY Office. Entrance will be from Centre Street.

There will be 16 class rooms, with three other rooms which may be used for classes. The combination gymnasium and auditorium, which will have a projection room as part of the nurse’s room, will accommodate approximately 1,000.

There will be a cafeteria, library, kitchens, board room and household-science room in the new school and a manual training section with doors large enough to permit the entrance of a combine and other machinery for use during agricultural courses at nights or during special community courses.

The new building will accommodate the present 408 pupils using the public school building and another 400 which means that eventually all the outlying schools (three at Charteris, one at Stark’s Corners and Murrell’s) will be closed and the pupils brought into Shawville by bus.

The present building, which is so crowded that two rooms outside are being used and two temporary rooms are to go into use this fall, will be available, after the new building is opened, for grades up to and including grade six and as a kindergarten, the first in history of the district.

Forty-two pupils from outside the Clarendon School district are presently coming into Shawville for high school education and eventually the new school will service the entire Lower Pontiac.

Other Schools: At the same time, he announced approval of the new high school in Shawville by Dr. C. P. Percival, Secretary of Protestant Education and Omer Desaulnier, Superintendent of Education, Ray Johnston told THE EQUITY that the following district schools are approved and underway: Calumet Island District School: Four-room annex, at a cost of approximately $76,000; government grant of 75 per cent. Allumette Island, St. Joseph’s Parish: Four-room school, $31,000, grant of 80 per cent. Fort Coulonge Village: New 10-room school, $159,000, grant of 80 per cent. Otter Lake: Four-room school and residence for teachers; Quyon: $8,000 government grant for purchasing residence for the teaching staff.
