A little of this and that: Invitation of the week . . . J. Nelson McLellan, former mayor of Bristol, Quebec, has had a personal invitation from the mayor of Bristol, England, to visit him this summer. Mr. McLellan’s failing health will prevent him from accepting this invitation.
Alibi of the week . . . Last Friday Clifford Hodgins and Harry Angus, of Maryland, were asked to a sawing at Ernest Gilpin’s and they turned up at 10.00 a.m., after having spent a couple of hours in the house with the fair sex while the other men sawed the first pile in the bush and moved out to the house for the second sawing. Their story was that they thought everyone else was late and that there was only the pile at the house to saw.
You never know . . . What you’ll find when you go digging. Amos Zacharias was digging post holes near Otter Lake and uncovered a den of snakes. There were 240, all sizes, from three inches to two feet and in five colors.
Local newsboys go to Ottawa: Five district newspaper carrier boys went to Ottawa last Saturday for a two-day, all expenses paid holiday. The Ottawa Journal, for whom the boys deliver, footed the bill. From this area went Donnie Burton and Bev Garrison, of Shawville; Jerome Devlin, of Campbell’s Bay; Charles Chevrier, of Quyon and Howard Weedmark, of Beechburg.
With the other 21 “newsies” the boys were taken on a tour of the plant and then proceeded to the House of Commons restaurant for lunch, under the patronage of George McIlraith, M.P. for Ottawa West.
Surprise party: On Friday evening about 80 friends and neighbors gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Palmer at a surprise party for the new Mr. and Mrs. Doug Palmer who were married on April 4. They came bearing many beautiful gifts and brought the refreshments and a wedding cake. The gifts were wheeled into the bride and groom by Roberta McNeil on Jackie Lang’s wagon which was decorated for the occasion. Jackie was a little worried in case he would not get his wagon back, but he did.
