The Way We Were:

A little of this and that: Wanted . . . A sure-fire cure for the hives. Ye olde editor would be most grateful for any assistance along this line.

Something new . . . Is being added to Reinke’s Hardware Store. By tearing out a couple of partitions and putting down a new cement floor Ed is adding about 500 square feet of floor space.

They’re gone . . . The whiskers that John McCredie has been supporting recently. He says he had to shave them off because he was being treated like a rag doll at home.

Ad – Petition for curfew: The following petition has been presented to the Council of the Municipality of Shawville.

We the undersigned respectfully petition that serious consideration be given to the introduction in this community of a nine o’clock (p.m.) curfew for the retirement from the street of all children under 16 years of age who are not accompanied by parent(s) or other responsible person(s). The signal to be given each evening by the ringing of a church bell.

While it is generally admitted that it is primarily the duty of the parent to curb street running and the keeping of late hours by children it is a most difficult problem to control. There are parents who seemingly are not interested and for those who are interested there are so many outside attractions that the task is made doubly hard.

Apart from the many and obvious reasons for which a curfew is desirable such as reducing the noise nuisance and late disturbances and contributary tendency to child delinquency the big and important reason is in benefits to be gained by the individual child from both health and educational standpoints.

A child cannot grow and develop properly without adequate hours of sleep and is likewise handicapped in the matter of absorbing school instruction. A child that is not getting sufficient sleep cannot be expected to make a good showing at school. It is neither fair to the child nor the teacher when such a condition exists. The cost of education has also grown by leaps and bounds and it is not in our own best interests that we should increase expenditures for better teachers and better facilities and neglect the safeguards that help to make for better educated children.

We are nearing the end of the school term when proper application of study means so much to children and the teacher and the utmost assistance is desirable on the part of the responsible officials.
