The Way We Were:

Local news: Mr. Thos. Dale, who was engaged in one of Gillies Bros’. camps on the Coulonge during the Winter months, arrived home last week, winter operations having been finished up in nearly all the camps up north.

Several of our local hockey enthusiasts went to Ottawa on Saturday to witness the final match for the Eastern championship, between Senators of Ottawa, league-leaders of the season, and Maroons, of Montreal, who came second in the race, and finally won out over Ottawa by one point on the round. The Shawville boys had looked for Ottawa to win, and were rather disappointed at the result.

There was quite a rush of farmers in town on Saturday, delivering stock—mostly pigs and calves.

By-Law strongly endorsed: The waterworks by-law, submitted to the property holders of Shawville last Wednesday, met with an expression of approval which far exceeded the expectations of its most zealous advocates.

A certain number of the ratepayers for some reason didn’t place themselves on record either for or against, and whilst it is not likely the result would have been materially changed had these parties voted, it would, at least have shown a greater spirit of interestedness than that which was manifested. As it was, the vote stood: For the by-law: 76 Against: 6.

Now in matters of this kind the property valuation becomes a conspicuous factor in determining the result, because should the valuation of those opposing a project—even though they were in a minority—exceed that of the majority who were favorable, such project could not legitimately be proceeded with. But in this case the valuation of the majority is more pronounced even than the disparity between the yeas and nays indicates.

Thus, it will be seen that the property represented by those favoring the by-law equals nearly 7-tenths of the whole valuation entitled to vote. This showing, it seems to us, affords rather conclusive evidence that sentiment is strongly in favor of carrying out the scheme outlined, or rather detailed in the by-law, and it is hoped now that the initial phase of the question has been dealt with and settled, that all citizens will co-operate in facilitating the work of the Council in carrying the project through with as little delay as possible Shelving this matter so long has been a mighty expensive risk.
