“Xmas Belle” Tops in Quebec: Elmside View Xmas Belle “G.P.” owned by George Pirie & Son, Bristol, Que., has won the honour as the highest producing 4 year old in Quebec, with a record of 20,851 lbs of milk, 861 lbs of Butterfat with a 4.13% Test.
George was presented with the George Rolande Gladu Trophy in recognition of “Xmas Belle”, achievement at the Annual Meeting of the Quebec Branch of the Holstein-Friesian Association of Canada, held in Trois Rivières.
Vowles, Russell, Wickens and Mucha also win honours as leading Quebec foresters: George Eades has won a gold medal and five hundred dollars from the Department of Lands and Forests for exceptional forest management. The presentation was made by the Minister, the Honourable Normand Toupin, at the annual meeting of the Quebec Foresters’ Association on Friday, February 27th. George’s score as decided by the judges was 945.
Edwin Vowles came second with 930 points in this category, which was for foresters who are not farmers. Ed won $450 for coming second. Second place in the division for farmers in region 5 was won by Alfred Russell of Bristol with 920 points. His prize was also $450. Other winners in Pontiac County included Denzil Mayhew who scored 825 points to win a silver medal, and two bronze medal winners, Keith Wickens with 785 points, and Alex Mucha with 755.
Shawville Old Pro’s on the road: Last weekend, March 12, 13, and 14th, the Quyon-Shawville 30 plus team played in the Aylmer Tournament. On Friday the game was against Brinks of Ottawa. Brinks were leading 1-0 but Jean-Guy Trudeau scored. Thus the game ended in a tie. Our 30 plus team came on strong with Jim Mulligan scoring in overtime to give the Quyon-Shawville team a 2-1 win over Brinks.
In the second game on Saturday they played Dubé Body Shop of Aylmer. The first period ended with Quyon-Shawville leading 1-0 on a goal scored by Royce Richardson. After two periods the score was tied 2-2. In the last period with about 4 minutes remaining Jim Mulligan scored, tying the game 4-4. This resulted in another overtime game. However, this time Quyon-Shawville went into sudden-death overtime with two men in the penalty box. The game ended with Dubé scoring. The final score being 5-4.
