The Way We Were:

Local news: Information reached us on Tuesday evening that a case of smallpox exists at the house of Mr. William Lett’s, Calumet Island. How the disease was contracted, however, we did not learn. The news has created a feeling of uneasiness around town, and people are speculating what is is best to be done to guard against the introduction of the scourge in this neighborhood. Some of our citizens have already fortified themselves by means of vaccination. But as there is considerable prejudice against the method, it is not likely to become generally adopted unless compulison is resorted to.

THE EQUITY learned with regret on Monday, of the death that morning, at Bryson, of Master Hector Gaboury, eldest son of Dr. T. C. Gaboury. Early last fall the young man was stricken with an attack of pneumonia, which developed lung trouble, which gradually sapped away his vitality until the end came as above recorded. The deceased was, previous to his illness, studying for the priesthood in Montreal.

We regret to chronicle the removal from our town V. S. Dr. Mulligan. He has decided to seek a wider field of labor, and will begin practicing in Ottawa. Dr. Mulligan will be much missed here, but everyone will join in wishing him success at the metropolis.

Our townsman, Mr. John Hodgins, who has been prostrated with pneumonia for some time past, has been in a very critical condition this week, but on Wednesday there was a change for the better. The hand of affliction has been laid with unusual severity on Mr. Hodgins’ household this winter, his wife, youngest son and servant, being with him also confined to their beds and at one time dangerously ill.
