The Way We Were:

Old Pros Trim Shawville 9-8:  The old stars of pro hockey emerged from the dim past last Friday night and aided and abetted by such Shawville oldsters as Ritchie Dale and Ebert Richardson trimmed the local team by 9-8.

Although not all the old pros showed up, there were enough of them to keep Shawville goalie Bill Thomson on the move and John Wilkinson, Bill Cowley and Syd Howe gave the spectators an eyeful of some real hockey.

Syd Howe with three goals paced the winners. Leslie Dale and John Wilkinson bagged two apiece. Bill Cowley, Charlie Hulguhist and Alex Smart added the others. Harris, Gibson, Rob McCredie, McTierian, Dale and Hobbs tallied for Shawville.

Bernice Gardiner still leading: Bernice Gardiner was still leading in the race to be crowned the Pontiac Lions Club Carnival Queen when latest results were announced at 5 p.m. Wednesday by General Manager Eldon Keon. The girl from Bryson had a total of 12,825 votes with Marie Cahill, of Calumet Island, a close second with 12,750 votes.

The Carnival Queen will be crowned at Campbell’s Bay on February 10 at the annual winter carnival sponsored by the Pontiac Lions Club. Voting for the six contestants is by draw tickets, worth 25 votes each and the holder of the lucky ticket is given a $50 bond.

The big day will include a dog derby, fancy skating and races, log sawing and wood chopping contests, broom ball and hockey with the Carnival Queen being crowned at 11 p.m.

At the end of the second week, standing of contestants is: Bernice Gardiner, Bryson, 12,825; Marie Cahill, Calumet Island, 12,750; Mona Burns, Portage du Fort, 6,150; Cecile Romain, Fort Coulonge, 6,025; Doris Burrows, Campbell’s Bay, 4,525, and Shirley Judd, Shawville, 4,125.

A little of this and that: Some people are honest . . . Mr. and Mrs. Elizee Richard, of Fort Coulonge, left a black valise containing $2,578 on a Montreal curb. They got it back by advertising in a Montreal newspaper.

There’s a reason . . . For Ken Pirie’s sore back. He says he carried a refrigerator on his back for half a mile.

It’s a long time . . . Since Harper Rennick started his taxi in Shawville. He bought his first cab in 1928 for $950 and his year’s insurance cost him $30.
