The Way We Were:

Pontiac Holstein Club annual banquet: A record crowd was on hand to help the Pontiac Holstein Club close out a very successful year.

President Archie Stanley welcomed everyone in attendance and introduced the many visitors from out of town. He then gave a report of events sponsored by the Club in 1975, complimenting the Breeders for the fine display of animals at the Black & White Show held in conjunction with Shawville Fair.

Walter Kilgour introduced special guests for the evening, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Pirie. He gave a résumé of their life leading up to the beginning of Elmside View Holsteins and their many years spent on their farm at Bristol. Mr. Pirie was presented with a pin, in recognition of his 40 years as a member of the Holstein Friesian Assoc. of Canada, by National Vice President Jean St. Pierre of Brownsburg, Quebec.

Past President Hugh Hammond, the Ladies toastmaster for the evening, made special mention of contribution made by Club Secretary Mrs. Evelyn Duff and made a presentation to Miss Rayma Hayes, Pontiac Holstein Club Hostess.

Ken Kilgour chaired the presentation of Production Awards, with Top Herd, 2 year old, 4 year old, and Mature Cow going to the Elmside View herd of George Pirie and Son with Top 3 year old going to Kennedy McBane & Son and the 2nd High Herd to J. Donald Duff & Son.

Dalton Hodgins chaired the presentations of Star Brood Cow and Long Time Production Awards recognizing many of the leading Breeders in the County.

A dance played to by the “Blacksmith’s” rounded out a tremendous evening for everyone involved.

LIP grants for Quyon, Bristol, Shawville, Mansfield: From the office of Tom Lefebvre in Ottawa the announcement of several more LIP grants has been received.

At Quyon the Pontiac Agricultural Society Division C will receive $18,300 to provide five or six jobs improving the fair grounds. Specifics include levelling the ground around the horse barns and the race track, clearing the brush and repairing the various barns, providing outdoor lavatories on the grounds, improving the main display building and the food booths and certain maintainance for the fastball diamond.

At Bristol $13,500 is being used to create four jobs. The project is to create a good controlled garbage disposal system for the two thousand permanent residents of the municipality and the two thousand summer residents.

At Shawville $16,275 will be granted to clean up Shaw Lake and provide a park around that area which will improve the view for senior citizens at the proposed old folks home. The money will also be used to clean up the area around the springs which provide town water. Four jobs are expected to be created for this project.

At Mansfield beside the red covered bridge, the Municipality of Mansfield and Pontefract intends to build a municipal hall and offices with $9,300, this amount to be used for labor and the municipality to borrow the money needed for materials.
