The Way We Were:

Local news: Shawville Curling Club will be independent of the skating rink this winter, as the new rink, now in course of erection, will be ready for use when the curling season opens. The rink is located on the Dagg property, off Lang Street, north of the G. F. Hodgins Co’s store.

Mr. A. G. Proudfoot last week vacated the G. A. Howard building (which had served the purposes of a hotel since the Pontiac House was destroyed by fire) and opened up the splendid new building that now adorns the site of the old hotel, and which stands foremost in appearance and capacity of any hotel in the county. Mr. Howard has therefore been enabled to remove to his own house, and make way for the return to town of Mr. Wm. J. Horner, whose house on King St. he had been occupying.

October went out leaving a pretty heavy coating of snow on the ground in this section, and from Otter Lake north and northeast there was abundant snow for fairly good sleighing, and impeding car traffic almost to the stopping point. Rain, in copious quantity, following the snowfall has since left the roads in very bad condition, where gravelling has not been performed, and the Pickanock road between Shawville and Ladysmith is probably the worst of the main highways in this district, and those whose misfortune it is to travel over one particularly bad section must wonder what on earth possessed the Clarendon Council to undertake the work of road grading at this late time of year, especially in view of the uncertain weather that has prevailed during the past six weeks.
