The Way We Were:

New owners spruce up River View Inn, the cottage: When Don McCredie sold the River View Inn in April, it landed in the laps of Garry and Kelly McLean.

Garry grew up cottaging in Norway Bay with his family each summer. During that time, he watched different stores come and go, such as Jimmy’s and Pop Welches’, which shut down in the 70s and 80s respectively.

He watched the Scobie House become the River View Inn when John Scobie sold the property to McCredie and Ron Workman in ‘68.

The Scobie House burned down in ‘86 due to poor wiring, but the annex still stands there today.

McLean bought the old annex, known as the lodge, the trailer park and the beach in early April and began doing renovations right away. A month later, he purchased the dining room and bar.

“I really wanted to revive what the old building looked like,” McLean said.

“It has tremendous emotional character for a lot of the elderly Norway Bay residents.”

Another new business cemented in Pontiac: The faces behind two Pontiac businesses are changing while one new business is changing the face of cement making in Pontiac.

Tom Orr of Tom Orr Cartage has teamed up with Daniel Lamarche of Lamarche and McGuinty to turn Lamarche’s gravel pit, located in the old Hilton Mine pit into a cement plant called Pontiac Cement.

“We have the stone. It’s just a matter of a new product.,” said Lamarche.

The plant was built and the stone was tested to make sure it was environmentally sound. It was classified as class one stone, the best possible rating.

“We’re almost doing what you call recycling.” Orr said.
