Local News: Mr. Nellis Hodgins has purchased Mrs. Eades’ cottage at Green Lake, which will soon have its usual quota of summer residents.

Dominion Day passed off very quietly in Shawville. While it was not observed generally as a holiday, many citizens went out of town, some to see the big circus in Ottawa, some to attend the celebration in Arnprior, others to take in the picnic at Campbell’s Bay and still others, pursuing the bent of their natural inclinations, went fishin’. It would not have been unusual, of course, for the day to pass without a shower or two.

The new Board of Commissioners which is to manage the schools of Shawville and Clarendon, under the amalgamation plan which has recently come into effect, was elected by acclamation on Monday, without much friction or undue excitement.

Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Howard were among those from Shawville who attended the “Old Home Week” celebration in Perth last week and report having had an exceptionally enjoyable time. Going by way of Renfrew, they picked up Mr. and Mrs. Stafford of that town and proceeded on their journey. They had the pleasure of going through the Wampole’s and Jergen’s factories and brought home souvenirs from those large establishments. They also visited the shoe factory and other places of interest in the old historic town, all contributing to the pleasure of the trip.

A new trade treaty between Canada and the West Indies has been made, whereby better tariffs on agricultural products will be extended to Canada.

Since the terrific earthquake shocks on June 29th at Santa Barbara, Cal., which did tremendous damage to the town, other shocks have been felt there but less severe.
