The Way We Were:

CBC airs 16-year-old Shawville girl’s drinking and driving commercial: Former Pontiac High School student Bobbi Russett created a drinking and driving commercial that began a six-week airing on CBC television.

The 16-year-old made the video in her Grade 11 communications technology course at Renfrew Collegiate Institute and went on to become the regional winner in CBC’s Extreme Attitudes Against Drinking and Driving and Driving Video Contest, winning $500 and the six weeks of airtime.

Russett said she did the commercial not only for the love of film making, but because she’s against drinking and driving.
“You always hear about children and students who are killed in drinking and driving accidents, so I thought maybe if I did this great commercial, not only could I gain experience, but maybe I could change somebody’s mind,” she said.

Washing cars for Wonderland: Maison des Jeunes kids and directors got themselves wet and dirty on Saturday to earn money to fund a planned excursion to Canada’s Wonderland.

Director Kelly Anne Stewart and a dozen of her kids from the youth centre in Shawville washed cars at Shawville Ford and kicked off a fundraising campaign for the centre’s programs.

“We need about $800 so that our kids, about 74 of them, can go to Wonderland in August,” explained Stewart.
