The Way We Were:

Local News: We are pleased to announce the sale of THE EQUITY to Mr. James Gray, formerly editor of the Arnprior Chronicle and previously with weekly newspapers in his native Scotland. At this time we wish to pay tribute for the great assistance rendered us since the death last November of our brother, W.G. Cowan, who had served as editor since 1931 when he succeeded our father, the late J.A. Cowan, who founded this newspaper nearly sixty-seven years ago. We would like to pay tribute to Rev. A.F. Fokes who so capably filled the editorial duties with the result that publication continued without a break and the traditions of the newspaper carried on since 1883, were upheld.

About 1,000 cheering and horn-blowing boys and girls started off the annual Rotary Club Halloween frolic on Monday night with a parade through the main street of the town. They started from the exhibition grounds, led by a broadcasting car playing march music and then returned for the principal activities of the evening.

Rotary members, led by president Neil Drummond, had made great preparations. In the judging of the costumes, the following were the prize winners: best trimmed bicycle, Billy McKinley; best comic costume, junior girl Helen Imison; senior girl, Mrs. Tracey; junior boy, Raymond Lalonde; senior boy, William Palmer. Best character costume: junior girl, Janey Storie; senior girl, Silvia Gibson; junior boy, David Yach, senior boy, Hillis Connelly. Most original costume, Barbara Smith, Gladys Sparling.
After music was enjoyed, all present were served with hot dogs served by Asa Smart and a host of helpers.

O.B. Cuthbertson of Maryland had a field day at the Ottawa Winter Exhibition last Thursday when he showed in the heavy horse class. He captured two Senior Championships, two Grand Championships one Reserve Grand Championship. All his exhibits were Clydesdales.

A welcome from the Deputy District Governor, Tom Moorhead of Bryson was given Shawville Lions Club when they met in regular session at the Pontiac House last Thursday evening.

D.D.G. Moorhead said it was wonderful to see such a turn-out as was present on that evening. President Hardy Argue said that the recently formed club had received a great deal of help from the Deputy District Governor and the members of the Pontiac Lions Club in the first weeks of their existence and thanked the representatives on behalf of the Shawville Club members.

Plans for the reformation of Shawville Community Band were made at a meeting held in the school on Thursday evening when Norris Jones, the band president, presided over a meeting of the band executive and a committee of Shawville Rotary Club who have promised to assist the band to re-start. Shawville Community Band have a number of instruments which belonged to the former bands sponsored in this community and in addition there are about fifty new uniforms available.
