The Way We Were:

Local News: A rumour is current that Mr. J.E.S. Trelawney, the gentleman connected with the Anglo-Canadian syndicate which was operating the Ostrom nickel mine during the past summer, has applied to the Quebec government for one of the extensive water powers at Bryson with the object of supplying electrical power to the surrounding villages and perhpas the erection of a large pulp mill. It is hoped the news is not too good to be true.

A prisoner named Marneaux from Temiscamingue, serving a three months’ term at Bryson gaol for theft, broke gaol on Wednesday night and escaped.

He was securely locked up in the evening but on Thursday morning was gone, the locks having been opened and the gaol yard wall scaled.

He was re-captured near Campbell’s Bay late Thursday evening and returned to prison. He boasts he can open any of the locks and will desert again.

A big day at Chapeau on Tuesday, Oct. 3 in the history of the usually rather quiet village, for two notable events came off that day. The first was the blessing of the church of St. Alphonsus de Liguori.
We are indebted to the Pembroke Standard for the following report: The church is one of the handsomest and most compact ecclesiastical buildings in the Diocese of Pontiac. Father Latulippe of Pembroke preached an eloquent sermon in French, taking as his subject the beauty of the House of God.

After dinner the people began to flock into he grounds of the Agricultural Society No. 2, County of Pontiac, for that is the official name of what is generally known as the Chapeau Fair.

The attendance was large although the gate receipts were not as large as on former years; yet it was marvelous the crowd of people gathered there to enjoy the fine day, for though cold, it was one of the most pleasant days we have had for the past fortnight.

The merchants of Shawville have agreed to close their respective places of business on the 19th inst., being the date appointed as a day of general Thanksgiving.
