Shawville’s annual fishing derby returned to Mill Dam Park this past Saturday. Organized by the Municipality of Shawville, 64 kids registered for the free of charge event.
Basking in the warmth of the early June day, derby participants took to the creek to showcase their fishing acumen. An approximately 50 metre section of the creek had been sectioned off and stocked with fish specially for the derby.
According to Shawville mayor Bill McCleary, the creek was stocked with 200 speckled trout and 400 rainbow trout ranging from six and 11 inches.
Event participants excitedly moved back and forth on both banks of the river, looking for the best place to cast a line. At the sight of a catch, participants and onlookers alike cheered enthusiastically.
Ella Richardson was the winner of the biggest fish in the female division, and Seth Dyelle was the winner in the male division.
Roman Dyelle, Hudson Moore, Paisley Cameron and Josh Coleman took home the event’s door prizes.
Free popcorn was available for all event attendees. A chip stand selling hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and beverages was also present .
In addition to the fishing, various municipal owned vehicles were present for event participants to check out. These included a backhoe, street sweeper truck and old ladder truck from the fire department. Machine enthusiasts young and old relished the opportunity to inspect the vehicles up close.
The event was sponsored by J.J’s Grocery, Canadian Tire, Giant Tiger and O’Malley’s Equipment.
