Dear Editor,
No, Mr. Hager, I am not apathetic about Canadian government, nor about government in the Federal riding of Pontiac. I am cynical about party politics, and this B.S. election, which will cost, not serve the citizens of Canada, but only certain leading parties.
Election reform? Not going to happen — certainly not in this election cycle. Nuclear waste dump? Probably going to happen, even if against the wishes of the vast majority of upper Ottawa Valley residents. I know for whom I’m voting, and it’s for the woman who most closely reflects my views on politics. But she will follow the party line, whether her party is in power or opposition — they always do. I would be thoroughly impressed if any candidate should pronounce that her loyalties are with her constituents and that she will vote in favour of any good idea that comes up in Parliament. But such promises are rare and broken as quickly as they are spoken.
People around here use federal politics as an excuse to complain about something over which they have no control. Yes, we will vote, and hope it comes out our way, but it really won’t change our lives one way or another. We use weather in much the same way. There are weather predictions and weather reality. We can only watch and be aware enough to look out the window to see if it’s raining, before we venture out of doors.
