In Hospital Here Six Years Thomas Eades Buried Thursday: One of the best known and highly respected citizens of Shawville, Thomas Eades, died in Pontiac Community Hospital on Monday night. He took ill six years ago, and has been confined to the hospital ever since. At the time of his death he was in his 86th year.
The late Mr. Eades was an outstanding leader in community activity. In church life, he was a member from his youth, and a warden for years, of the Anglican Church of Radford, and later of St. Paul’s, Shawville. He was a member of the Pontiac Lodge No. 40 A.F. & A.M., under whose auspices the funeral was held. He was for years President of the Pontiac Rural Telephone Company, Director of the Pontiac Agricultural Society, and took an active interest in the affairs of Clarendon and Shawville.
Shawville Rate Set at 20 Mills: Shawville Council met on November 6, at a regular monthly meeting at Hynes’ Hall. Present: Mayor Smith and Councillors Alexander, Dale, Cameron, Young, and Gordon. It is proposed by Cr. Alexander that By-law 143 be introduced, which reads as follows: “Whereas it is necessary and expedient that a tax rate be levied to meet the necessary expenses of the Municipality of Shawville, it is hereby resolved and ordained by By-law 143 that a rate of 20 mills on the dollar be and is hereby imposed on each and every dollar of assessed property within said municipality and that a discount of 3 percent be allowed on all current taxes paid before Dec. 15th, 1950. 5 percent will be charged on all arrears after Jan. 1st, 1951.”
Shawville Lions Club Celebrating Charter: Almost 200 members, their wives and guests were on hand last Thursday night to help the Lions Club of Shawville celebrate their birthday party. It was the first anniversary of the club receiving their charter. When first organized there were 28 Lions. Today the membership stands at 36.
The party was held at Pine Lodge, Bristol, with a chicken banquet as the chief attraction. Following the banquet, “Share the Wealth” games were handled by Lion James Gordon.
An auction was handled by Lion Bill Thompson and Fred McCredie just about brought the house down. Surprise packages were auctioned and were knocked down at $1.00 each.
Members of the Board of Trustees of Pontiac Community Hospital were guests at the banquet and Chairman J. M. Argue was presented with a check for $500. By Lion Lee Hodgins as the Lions share towards purchase of new equipment for the hospital. The other $500 is being put up by the Rotary Club.
