The Way We Were:

Hunter Mistakes Cow For A Deer: Either hunters in the Charteris area are near-sighted or they don’t know a cow from a deer, according to Hugh Horner.

As evidence of what might have been a fatal error on the part of some hunter, Mr. Horner has a cowbell with a neat bullet hole through it, inflicted while the cow was still wearing the bell.

The cow, an Ayrshire, is no worse for her experience but she doesn’t give quite as much milk now and the hole so changed the sound of the bell, Mr. Horner didn’t know it was his cow coming from pasture. If the hunter had been a little more near-sighted or anxious he would have rung up a loss of $150 to $200 for a new cow.

Hodgins Ahead In Phone Book: The Demon Statistician has gone to work on the new telephone book and has discovered that the Hodgins family has the most telephones in Shawville.

Forty-five families with the name Hodgins in Shawville have telephones but there are none listed in Campbells Bay. Next in strength, numerically, are the Horners, with 23 in Shawville and two in Campbells Bay.

Far down the list are the Smiths with 13 in Shawville and 11 in the Bay. The Elliotts do pretty well with 18 in Shawville and six in Campbells Bay. The Daggs ring up 13 in Shawville but draw a blank in the Bay.

The Arbic family show no favors. They have one listing in each community. Two other families with 13 listings each in Shawville are the Armstrongs and the Bretzlaffs.
