Local News: In spite of the terrible roads, measles and mumps, the Farm Forum of Pontiac rounded out a successful season last Monday. Notable among these was the meeting of Stark’s Corners group where it was decided to have a petition drawn up protesting the prevailing road conditions, this to be signed by Forum members and all other interested and presented to the Minister of Highways by the local M.L.A. Ray Johnston.
A Gaspé man, 58 and father of 13 children, employed at the Pentagon Construction Company was killed at Portage du Fort on Monday afternoon when he was crushed under the heavy dual wheels of a truck on which he had been returning from work. It was thought that the victim slipped from the truck or was in the act of climbing aboard when the accident occurred.
Three Ottawa brothers appeared before Judge Roland Millar at Campbell’s Bay on Wednesday as a sequel to their arrest in Wyman last Thursday morning. The men pleaded not guilty to charges of stealing $50 worth of lumber from the J.M. Argue lumber yard in Shawville and of breaking and entering a house owned by Irvin Cone and stealing carpenter tools to the approximate value of $75.
Dr. Henry Argue, J.M.’s brother, had been sleeping in the company’s office following a series of four other thefts from the lumber yard. Hearing the sound of a motor, he ran from the building and seized the keys of a truck which was standing near a lumber pile. The men offered no resistance and immediately started to walk along the CPR tracks. Dr. Argue notified Constables J. Muir and Linden Young of the Pontiac detachment of Quebec Provincial Police who made the arrests 12 miles away in Wyman.
